How to make people remember your brand

Let’s talk about how to make people remember your brand. What will make your business the one people talk about over coffee instead of the one they scroll past without a second glance?

Walking down any high street you’ll (hopefully!) see plenty of shops. Most of them fade into the blur of “just another place that sells stuff”… but usually there’s at least one place that always catches your eye and sticks.

Maybe it’s the shop with the freaking awesome rollerskates in the window (ok, that might just be me!). Or the tongue-in-cheek sign outside that makes you smile. Or perhaps it’s the owner who always asks about your weekend and actually remembers your name.

That right there is the secret. People don’t remember your brand just because you exist. They remember your brand because of the unique quality that resonates with them.

If you want people to remember your brand, stop sounding like a robot

“Great service.” “Affordable prices.” “We care about quality.” Heard it all before? Of course you have, because every other business is saying exactly the same thing.

If you want people to remember your brand, drop the bland. Tell them what’s unique about what you do, how you do it, and why it matters. But more than anything, don’t be afraid to use your own voice and say it loud: with energy and passion.

This is your starting point if you want to get people to remember your brand.

Tell the messy, human bits

Brand stories don’t need to be cinematic masterpieces. They just need to be honest.

Who doesn’t love the story of an inventor who started their business because they couldn’t find what they wanted anywhere? Or the creative who turned a side hobby into something serious. Perhaps your business is fuelled almost entirely on Yorkshire Tea and Hobnobs. Who knows, unless you share?

Whatever your story, it’s relateable and humans have a deep need to forge connections. It’s the details that make people smile and nod, and that’s what makes your brand memorable.

Let your quirks do the heavy lifting

Have you considered that the things you take for granted, or worry about, might be the reasons people come back time and again?

Whether your emails always include a sarcastic side note, or your products arrive with doodles on the packaging, it stands out. It’s these quirks and idiosyncracies make you human. And humans are much easier to remember than faceless logos.

Consistency beats volume every time

Are you putting pressure on yourself to be everything, everywhere, all at once? Well stop it immediately!

If you’re a micro business or sole entrepreneur, you’re going to burn yourself out and be miserable. Scale things back and be focused. You just need to be there when it counts and do it often enough that people know you’re still in the game.

Think of it like watering a house plant: little and often keeps it alive. A flood once a year most certainly will not. Consistency builds trust. And trust means your audience remembers you when it matters.

Connection over perfection

I’m a huge advocate of “done is better than not done.” Polished graphics are pretty, but people remember how you made them feel.

Did you answer their question? Or make them laugh? Reminding your audience that there is a real human behind the business can do more to help people remember your brand than all the fancy photography in the world.

Marketing isn’t a performance, it’s a conversation. And conversations are memorable.
